iFi didn't redesign its flagship headphone amplifier. It went back through the parts of it people actually touch, and fixed those.

The iCAN Phantom 1.5 keeps the architecture that made the original notorious: two complete Class A input stages, one discrete solid-state and one all-valve on matched General Electric 5670 tubes, plus a built-in electrostatic energizer, in a two-tier chassis that weighs 4.2 kg. What changed is the operating layer. Gain now steps 0 dB, 12 dB and 24 dB instead of 0/9/18. IEMatch attenuation goes deeper, up to 12 dB single-ended and 24 dB balanced. The display gets a VU meter and a reworked interface, and the Nexis app now reports tube health. Same price as before: €3,749.

What actually changed

  • Wider gain ladder. 0 dB, 12 dB and 24 dB replace 0/9/18 dB. Bigger separation between steps means you land in a usable part of the volume range whether you're on a 16 ohm IEM or a 600 ohm dynamic, instead of hovering near the bottom of the pot.
  • Stronger IEMatch. Up to 12 dB of attenuation single-ended and up to 24 dB balanced. This is the fix for the classic flagship-amp problem: an amp that can push 15,000 mW is not naturally quiet behind a sensitive custom in-ear.
  • New display and UI. A VU meter view and a redesigned interface on the colour screen, plus an anti-fingerprint coating on the glass.
  • Nexis app, expanded. Remote control, diagnostics and firmware updates as before, now with real-time tube health monitoring. On a valve amp you plan to keep for a decade, knowing when the GE 5670s are drifting is the feature that matters most.

Three switchable voicings stay: Solid-State, Tube, and Tube+ for a looser, more romantic character. So does the electrostatic energizer, with Normal and Custom/Pro bias sockets running 230 V to 640 V RMS, which means a set of stats plugs straight in with no second box in the chain. Output is still absurd, over 15,000 mW peak balanced into 16 ohms and over 27 V into 600 ohms, with SNR above 145 dB(A) balanced. XBass Pro and XSpace Pro remain analogue, with three intensity levels each.

What the press is saying

The 1.5 landed too recently for full reviews, so treat the launch coverage as first impressions rather than verdicts. Gear Patrol called it "one of the very few amplifiers on the market capable of driving virtually any headphone type", and quoted iFi's own framing of the unit as "the last amplifier a dedicated headphone enthusiast ever needs to buy". We'll update this post when measured reviews appear.

Who it is for

Buy it if your collection has outgrown a single amplifier: stats on one stand, a planar flagship on another, and a set of custom IEMs that hiss on everything else you own. That is the exact spread the 1.5 is built to cover from one chassis, and the reason to pick it over a specialist amp that does one of those things slightly better.

Look elsewhere if you own one pair of headphones. The honest trade-off here is complexity: three modes, three gain steps, two IEMatch depths, two bias outputs and two analogue processors is a lot of surface for a single-headphone system, and a far simpler amp will get you most of the way for a fraction of €3,749.
